Can an umbilical hernia be fixed with a tummy tuck?

Published on August 12, 2013

An umbilical hernia can be fixed at the same time as a tummy tuck but there is always a risk of causing damage to the umbilicus skin. This can lead to devascularization of the umbilical skin which may require complete removal of the umbilicus. Dr. Wali has developed a unique technique to recreate the umbilicus at the time of a tummy tuck with hernia repair which looks natural and aesthetically pleasing.

The risk of losing the umbilicus in a traditional tummy tuck is small, but when there is an umbilical hernia that is repaired at the same time the risk goes up significantly. The larger the hernia the higher the risk. In some cases the hernia may be so big that the repair if done at the time of the tummy tuck will necessitate removal of the belly button.
