How the depiction of beauty may or may not change with time or vary culturally

Published on July 29, 2013

apIt is interesting to observe how the depiction of beauty may or may not change with time or vary culturally. This sculpture is from 11th century India and depicts a lady playing with a ball.

Although the sculpture appears to be done in a natural style there are certain aspects of the female form that appear to be exaggerated. Most likely the breasts have been artistically enhanced to conform to a contemporary (11th century) Indian standard of beauty.

From a plastic surgery perspective the breasts of this 1000 plus year old sculpture appear to conform to 21st century western aesthetic standards. The prominence and lack of ptosis(natural droopiness) of the breasts are typical of a 21st century breast augmented with a silicone or saline implant.
