In 2009, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the ultrasound technology used in facelifts, neck lifts, and reduction of lines and wrinkles in the chest area. The ultrasound facelift is a non-invasive technique that involves using ultrasound energy to restore and tighten drooping skin while boosting collagen production.
How Does the Ultrasound Facelift Work?
The procedure involves applying ultrasound energy to the deeper layers of facial tissues. Because the technology allows the energy to penetrate a depth of about 5mm into the skin, the waves actually reach the second layer of muscles.
Collagen is produced in the deeper skin tissues. An ultrasound facelift works effectively because it goes through the outer layers of skin to deliver energy to the inner layers, stimulating production of new collagen.
Heat energy from the applicator on the machine is used to target several layers of the skin and the underlying muscles. When set at the right temperature, ultrasound energy improves skin laxity and rejuvenates collagen. In turn, this leads to a reduction in sagging skin and fewer lines and wrinkles.
What Does the Procedure Entail?
The ultrasound facelift device is positioned against the area being treated. With the ultrasound viewer, which is a mechanism located on the device, the physician is able to select the optimum settings to suit your requirements.
Once the settings are adjusted, ultrasound energy is applied to that specific location. During the procedure, you might sporadically feel a slight tingling and a warm sensation while the energy is being delivered. Typically, the duration of face and neck treatments is 60 to 90 minutes per treatment.
On completion of an ultrasound facelift, any sensations you felt during the treatment will completely subside. Within hours, you may experience swelling and slight soreness, and the treated areas may also become flushed. Rarely, the skin might also exhibit some bruising or the area might feel numb. However, usually within a few days, these symptoms subside.
Is There Any Downtime?
Since the treatment is completely non-invasive and doesn’t involve any scalpels or stitches, the ultrasound facelift requires zero downtime afterwards. You will be able to go back to work immediately and resume all your daily activities, including exercise.
The Results of the Ultrasound Facelift
With the major boost your collagen production has received, it is only a matter of days before you start noticing visible improvements in the quality of your skin. Over the course of the first three months, your body will continue to produce more collagen, lifting your sagging skin and making it tighter.
The treatment makes skin firmer and smoother, easing away lines and wrinkles. The effectiveness of the treatment varies, as does the length of time the results last.
